Shelter Veterinarian

Fishers, IN

At the Humane Society for Hamilton County, we’re rewriting what shelter medicine looks like. As one of the only no-kill, open-admission shelters in the country, we welcome every animal—abused, abandoned, injured, overlooked—and give them the medical care, love, and advocacy they deserve. Our placement rate? Consistently over 98%.

Our brand-new $12 million facility includes a surgical suite with top-of-the-line radiology and surgical equipment, triage and recovery areas, dedicated behavior and quarantine zones, and everything you need to provide gold-standard shelter medicine.

About the Role

As our Shelter Veterinarian, you’ll:

  • Lead the charge in high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter, soft tissue, orthopedic, and emergency surgeries.
  • Triage and treat cruelty, abuse, and neglect cases with empathy and urgency.
  • Implement and refine best-in-class medical protocols and SOPs.
  • Serve as a mentor—not a manager—to a skilled team of techs, RVTs, and medical coordinators.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to raise the bar of animal care and shelter medicine.

What Makes This Job Extraordinary

  • No red tape, no egos—just impact. You’ll work shoulder-to-shoulder with a tight-knit, mission-driven team that leads with heart.
  • Innovation over bureaucracy. Your voice and medical expertise will shape protocols, not sit on a shelf.
  • A workplace that walks the talk. We live our values, from our “Whatever It Takes” mentality to our commitment to equity, empathy, and excellence.

Compensation & Perks

  • Salary is competitive, negotiable based on experience
  • Full benefits: Medical (Anthem), dental, vision, disability, HSA/FSA, identity theft protection
  • Pet perks: Discounts and free supplies for your own animals
  • PTO starts day one + paid CE days (we cover your license renewal)
  • Relocation assistance

Who You Are

  • A licensed DVM (or eligible in Indiana) with shelter or HQHVSN experience
  • Passionate about rescue and aligned with our no-kill, “Whatever It Takes” philosophy
  • Calm in a storm, decisive in a crisis, and collaborative in every moment
  • Willing to challenge the status quo to improve outcomes—for animals and the humans who love them
