Medical Intake Coordinator – Humane Society for Hamilton County

Location: Fishers, IN Pay Range: $17.00–$23.00/hour Status: Full-Time

About the Role

As a Medical Intake Coordinator, you’re at the front lines of saving lives. You’ll support the medical onboarding of new shelter animals and provide ongoing care for those in need—working closely with our veterinarians, intake manager, and surgical team. From vaccines and vitals to surgical support and emergency response, you’ll help ensure animals get the care they need quickly and compassionately.

What You'll Do:

  • Administer exams, vaccines, medications, and treatments
  • Assist in diagnostics, surgical prep, and patient monitoring
  • Perform humane euthanasia (when medically directed and approved)
  • Intake new animals with compassion and precision—drawing blood, giving vaccines, microchipping, and more
  • Communicate clearly with our foster team, medical team, and volunteers
  • Support after-hours and emergency care (rotating on-call)
  • Keep accurate, timely records using PetPoint and other tools
  • Ensure sick animals follow prescribed treatment plans
  • Maintain surgical spaces, clean equipment, and help animals recover safely

 

What You Bring:

Hard Skills

  • Veterinary or shelter medicine experience required
  • Strong handling skills with dogs and cats, including fearful or injured animals
  • Familiarity with contagious illness and quarantine procedures
  • Comfort with administering meds, fluids, and anesthesia support
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and stay on your feet throughout long shifts
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, PetPoint, or similar software

Soft Skills

  • A calm, compassionate presence under pressure
  • Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Willingness to work some evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Flexibility to pivot when the unexpected happens (because it will)
  • A “whatever it takes” mindset that puts animal lives first
